Huntington ranked among top 10 Midwest colleges

The 2010 U.S. News & World Report annual collegiate rankings has listed Huntington University as 6th

FOR RELEASE August 20, 2009
HUNTINGTON, IN—The 2010 U.S. News & World Report annual collegiate rankings has listed Huntington University as 6th among the Best Baccalaureate Colleges in the Midwest region, rising one spot from its 7th place ranking in the 2009 edition.

Huntington also appears as No. 5 in the Best Values category for baccalaureate colleges in the Midwest. This ranking is based on the percentage of students receiving need-based grants, the average cost of tuition after receiving those grants and the average discount from the total cost.

As one of the nation’s top-ranked Christian colleges, Huntington offers more than 70 academic programs, including new bachelor’s degrees in nursing, Spanish, digital media arts, economics and finance, political studies, social work, sports ministry and worship leadership. Huntington also offers master’s degrees in education, counseling and ministry.

For more than a decade, U.S. News & World Report has consistently ranked Huntington among the Midwest’s best colleges. The 2010 edition of the magazine’s guide to America’s Best Colleges marks the 15th consecutive year that Huntington University has been listed among the top-tier schools in the region.

“It is an honor to be selected as one of America’s Best Colleges in the 2010 edition of the U.S. News and World Report college rankings,” said Dr. Norris Friesen, dean and vice president of Huntington University. “To be chosen for the 15th consecutive year affirms our commitment to offering a high quality, Christ-centered liberal arts education. These rankings acknowledge the work of our distinguished faculty and serve as a benchmark attesting to Huntington University’s progress in our academic enterprises.”

To rank schools, U.S. News first organizes colleges and universities by category and then ranks them within each group. Rankings are based on the following criteria: graduation and retention rates (25 percent), faculty resources (20 percent), student selectivity (15 percent), financial resources (10 percent), and alumni giving (5 percent).

Several Indiana schools received accolades in the 2010 guidebook. Taylor University was ranked first among the Best Baccalaureate Colleges in the Midwest region. In addition to Huntington, Franklin College, Bethel College, Manchester College, St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, St. Joseph’s College, Grace College and Seminary, Trine University, and Marian College also were listed in the top tier on the baccalaureate colleges list.

Classes begin for Huntington University students on Aug. 31.

All U.S. News rankings will appear on the magazine’s Web site, www.USNews.com. College-bound students can use the site to search for colleges and universities according to their own interests, fill out interactive worksheets, and search for scholarship and financial aid information. The weekly edition of U.S. News & World Report magazine containing many of the rankings will go on sale Aug. 24, and the America’s Best Colleges newsstand book will be available on Aug. 25.
